Fall Protection Leads List of Ten Most Common OSHA Violations for 13th Consecutive Year

On October 24, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released its list of the most frequently cited safety standards violations for fiscal year 2023.

OSHA publishes the annual “top 10” list to alert employers about commonly cited standards so they can take steps to find and fix recognized hazards before OSHA shows up and to protect workers’ health and safety.

According to OSHA, the top 10 most common violations in 2023 were:

  1. Fall Protection, Construction (29 CFR 1926.501) with 7,271 violations
  2. Hazard Communication, General Industry (29 CFR 1910.1200) with 3,213 violations
  3. Ladders, Construction (29 CFR 1926.1053) with 2,978 violations
  4. Scaffolding (29 CFR 1926.451) with 2,859 violations
  5. Powered Industrial Trucks, General Industry (29 CFR 1910.178) with 2,561 violations
  6. Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) (29 CFR 1910.147) with 2,554 violations
  7. Respiratory Protection, General Industry (29 CFR 1910.134) with 2,481 violations
  8. Fall Protection Training, Construction (29 CFR 1926.503) with 2,112 violations
  9. Eye and Face Protection, Construction (29 CFR 1926.102) with 2,074 violations
  10. Machine Guarding, General Industry (29 CFR 1910.212) with 1,644 violations.

The list represents data collected from October 1, 2022, to September 29, 2023. Fall Protection has been the top violation for 13 years in a row.
